Cosmetic and Functional Benefits

What is rhinoplasty?

A focal feature of the face, your nose plays a prominent role in shaping your overall appearance. People sign up for a rhinoplasty to revise the size, shape, and contours of their nose and achieve better facial harmony. Some patients also seek rhinoplasty to improve their breathing. Rhinoplasty involves removing, repositioning, or adding cartilage, skin, or other underlying structures to create a better nose shape. Each patient’s nose surgery will be unique to them, depending on their facial structure and surgical goals.

Precision Revision for Better Facial Harmony

What can Rhinoplasty do?

Balanced Facial Features

A large or small nose can create dissonance among your facial features. A poorly sized nose can contribute to the appearance of a receding chin. Many teens struggle with a nose that is too large for their face, which is often a source of teasing from their peers. Reshaping your nasal appearance helps bring about facial harmony, restoring a balanced and attractive appearance.

Improved Nasal Shape

Many people seek rhinoplasty to correct nasal deformities. Wide nasal bridges or prominent nasal humps can affect the attractiveness of your nose. Nasal deformities can be present from birth, but trauma to the nose can also affect its shape. Dr. Baker can specially sculpt a new nasal appearance that is natural and enhances your facial features.

Correction of Breathing Abnormalities

Deviated septums can be naturally occurring or the result of nasal trauma. Deviated septums obstruct the airflow through one or both nostrils because the cartilage that splits the nasal passages is crooked. Patients with deviated septums have difficulties breathing through their nose and often snore. We highly recommend visiting an ear, nose, and throat specialist for a consultation if a septoplasty is appropriate. Severely deviated septums can cause chronic discomfort in some patients. Dr. Baker will then be able to conduct the rhinoplasty after the ENT performs the septoplasty.

Am I a candidate for rhinoplasty?

If you have always wished you could revise the size or shape of your nose, rhinoplasty offers the ability to do so. Rhinoplasty can also correct structural problems that inhibit breathing or otherwise interfere with the functioning of the nose. Nose surgery is safe for healthy adults with realistic results and expectations. Certain medical conditions may make rhinoplasty unsafe. Dr. Baker will review your medical history to ensure that surgery can safely be performed.

What You Need to Know

Rhinoplasty Preparation and Procedure

Rhinoplasty Procedures

The goal of rhinoplasty is to create a new and improved nasal shape while maintaining a natural and balanced appearance. Nose surgery lasts about one and a half hours and is performed entirely by Dr. Baker. Your nose is shaped by gently removing and repositioning nasal structures, sometimes also by adding cartilage. The length of your nose is improved, and humps or bridges are slimmed down.

Rhinoplasty Incisions

The incision best suited for you will depend on the type of correction required to achieve your desired results. Closed techniques place all incisions inside the nasal passages. While some visibility is obscured, a skilled surgeon is still able to achieve dramatic, flawless results. Closed techniques may be preferred because they do not result in any visible scarring. Open techniques place incisions at the base of the nose and along the nostrils. This allows for more extensive, more visible access to the underlying structures of the nose, but it may result in some scarring.

Septoplasty (Functional Nose Surgery)

Septoplasty is a specialized nose surgery technique designed to treat a deviated septum. During septoplasty, the cartilage separating your nasal passages is modified to improve airflow. Septoplasty can also reduce the size of enlarged turbinates in the nose that may be affecting airflow. It is important that the cause of your nasal obstruction is diagnosed by an ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT) before your septoplasty. We highly recommend visiting an ENT specialist for a consultation if a septoplasty is appropriate. Severely deviated septums can cause chronic discomfort in some patients. Dr. Baker will then be able to conduct the rhinoplasty after the septoplasty is performed by the ENT.

Addressing Any Concerns You May Have about your Rhinoplasty in Miami and South Florida

Rhinoplasty Recovery, Results, and Aftercare

Recovery

You will experience bruising and swelling of your nose and face following your procedure. Nasal packing helps prevent bleeding, and splints support your healing nasal structures. You will return the day following your surgery for the nasal packing to be removed. You should rest for several days with your head elevated to minimize excess swelling.

Scars

Scarring will vary depending on the technique used for your procedure and your body’s natural healing process. Our Miami rhinoplasty patients who use a closed technique will find that no visible scarring develops.

Maintaining Your Rhinoplasty Results

You will have personal visits with Dr. Baker every two to three days for the first two weeks to have a nasal cleaning. You should avoid strenuous physical activities for four weeks following your procedure. While significant swelling begins to subside after three to six weeks, your nose may still be tender. Follow-up care is provided monthly for a year following your surgery.
