Why do some men have overdeveloped breasts? Having excess male breast tissue is a medical condition called gynecomastia, and it can be corrected through surgery. Male breast reduction removes excess breast tissue to improve the appearance of the chest.

Before and After Male Breast Reduction
What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is usually caused by biological factors. Many young men have pubertal gynecomastia due to changing hormone levels. Pubertal gynecomastia usually resolves itself as the young man reaches adulthood. Gynecomastia may also be caused by genetics, weight gain, aging, and drug or steroid abuse, or it may be a side effect of certain medications prescribed for other health concerns.

What Is the Best Way to Treat Gynecomastia?

Before beginning any treatment plan, consult your doctor to determine if you have gynecomastia. Pseudogynecomastia looks like gynecomastia but is only an accumulation of excess fat. If you have pseudogynecomastia, weight loss should be your first treatment plan. Your doctor should also determine the cause of your gynecomastia. If your gynecomastia is caused by hormonal imbalances or other medical conditions, treatment for these conditions may resolve gynecomastia without the need for gynecomastia surgery. Likewise, if your gynecomastia is caused by medications, drugs, or steroids, discontinuing use may reverse your gynecomastia.

Who Should Undergo Gynecomastia Surgery?

If weight loss or other treatment plans are not suitable or have proven ineffective for you, gynecomastia surgery is an excellent option. Men who are embarrassed by their bodies or who are harassed or ridiculed by their peers should consider the benefits of gynecomastia surgery. Young men with pubertal gynecomastia are often advised to wait several years, as the condition may resolve itself. An exception to this would be a boy with pronounced breast development. Candidates will have good health, good skin elasticity, excess fat and breast tissue in the chest, and possible emotional or psychological issues due to gynecomastia.

How Does Gynecomastia Surgery Work?

Dr. Baker performs gynecomastia surgery using liposuction and tissue extraction. Liposuction removes fatty tissue to recontour the chest. For patients with excess glandular tissue, a small incision is made around the lower edge of the areola so that excess glandular tissue may be extracted. For those with severe gynecomastia, the removal of excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin may be necessary, along with repositioning the nipple and areola.

How Can Gynecomastia Surgery Help You?

Gynecomastia surgery will improve your appearance as well as your quality of life. Men with overdeveloped breasts may feel that their bodies are less masculine and less attractive. Normalizing the appearance of your chest can resolve this body issue and help you to look better and feel better emotionally and psychologically. Gynecomastia surgery can provide long-lasting results. To maintain the best appearance, adapt your lifestyle as recommended by your doctor and surgeon so that you can enjoy your results for years to
